Photography equipment isn’t cheap. And, a lot of the brands that support photography require you to stay loyal to their brand. For example, if you purchase Profoto lighting equipment, you need to stick with purchasing Profoto accessories to go with it. This can get oh-so-expensive, especially if you love the Profoto brand. But, I’m excited to share that I’ve found a Profoto lighting tip that could save you hundreds (or possibly thousands) of dollars. Introducing the Profoto Bowen’s Adaptor!

Profoto Bowens Mount Adaptor
When it comes to lighting, there are a variety of brands on the market and Profoto is on the higher end of the pricing scale. I became interested in Profoto lighting equipment when I was tired of hauling my heavy, clunky, plug-in strobes on location with me. And, while there are a lot of benefits that Profoto lights offer, I was hesitant about the much higher price point for lights and accessories. That is, until I discovered the Profoto Bowens Mount Adaptor.
Profoto Lighting Benefits
Size
I have the Profoto B10 and I absolutely love the size of this light. It’s small, compact and if I’m being honest, pretty cute. ☺️ This light makes traveling on location so much easier, because it’s lightweight and fits into my camera bag with ease.
Quality
Upon opening the box, you’ll notice the quality of the material. Although it’s light weight, it feels sturdy and functions easily with an easy-to-turn knob for adjusting the angle of the light. The back of the light illuminates with a very clear interface with large numbers and menus that make adjusting the power, color temp and channels amazingly easy.
Stills and Video
Another major benefit is that you can use the Profoto B10x for stills and video. This means its a strobe and a continuous light in one to accommodate your needs as a photographer and videographer.
Battery Powered
The Profoto B10x is a battery powered light and this alone has been a breath of fresh air for me. After plugging in my older strobes for years and being more limited to setting up near an outlet or using long extension cords, being able to use the light literally anywhere has made set life on location so much easier.
The one drawback is that the battery life is not great when using it as a continuous light for video footage. It tends to run out of juice after about 2 hours. Having a backup battery or two is essential for video shoots that last more than a couple hours.

Profoto Lighting Cons
Price
As I mentioned earlier, the price of Profoto gear is on the higher end of the pricing scale and this can be a deciding factor for many people. A lot of different lights can range from $300 – $900, but the Profoto B10x was around $1,495.
I justified the higher price point after testing the light through LensRentals.com first. (I highly recommend testing gear before buying to make sure it’s a good fit for your workflow.) The ease of use, compact design and the convenience of having two lights in one felt like a major upgrade from where I was at with my older lights.
No Bowens Mount
A lot of studio lights have a universal bowen’s mount that allows you to use a variety of different soft boxes. The Profoto lights do not have a bowen’s mount. They require you to purchase the Profoto soft boxes to work with their lights, which are also incredibly expensive.
Complicated Softboxes
The Profoto softboxes are not easy to set up. I ordered one to test out and ended up returning it immediately. For the price point, it just wasn’t worth the complicated, time-consuming setup. I also purchased a Profoto umbrella, which I ended up keeping, because I needed a modifier for my light.
Introducing the Profoto Bowen’s Adaptor
For the most part, the Profoto B10x and the umbrella have worked out really well for me. However, I have a variety of great, easy-to-use EZ Glow Softboxes that were starting to collect dust in my studio closet. The EZ Glow softboxes are affordable, good quality and open and close just like an umbrella. They’re quick and easy to set up, which is how a softbox should be. Work smarter, not harder, right?
I started doing some research online for a Profoto compatible Bowen’s Mount Adaptor that would allow me to use my soft boxes with my Profoto light. And, sure enough, there was a solution! And, for only $45… I was a little skeptical, but hopeful!
I love this adaptor! It easily attaches to my Profoto light, which allows me to use all of my EZ Glow Softboxes. It’s pretty secure and has held up for a variety of photo shoots. I do wish there was a couple more screws to connect the softbox to the adaptor, but for the most part, this adaptor has saved the day… not to mention, tons of money.
