MY FAVORITE LENSES FOR FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY

FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY

I’m a photographer who knows that you don’t need the most expensive equipment to capture beautiful images. But, with good lenses, it can be tricky to avoid the expense. So I have invested in lenses that range from affordable to pretty damn expensive and all of them have been wonderful to work with. I decided to list my favorite lenses for food photography in an effort to share what has worked for me in a straight-forward, not-too-technical post for you. So for each lens, I share a simplified description of what I love about the lens, the cost and some images to show you how badass each of them are.

Please note that I shoot Nikon and all the lenses I use are compatible with Nikon. I also mention similar versions of these lenses from Canon and Sigma Art. In addition, these lens recommendations are also based on having a full frame camera.

MY FAVORITE LENSES FOR FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY

NIKON

Nikon 50mm 1.8

This lens is also known as the “nifty fifty” and is a total steal for the price. In fact, this was my first lens that I purchased to replace the “kit lens” that came with my first DSLR. It’s a lightweight, normal focal length lens which makes it incredibly versatile for different types of food shots from overhead setups to angled and straight on. In addition, the low aperture works really well for low light situations too. So I still have this lens in my lineup and it’s the first one I recommend to newer photographers who are looking for a good, affordable lens.

NIKON

Nikon 35mm 1.4

This is definitely the lens I use most often. I really like how it captures more of the scene than my 50mm is able to allow. This lens is a full frame, prime lens and it works so beautifully for the type of food shoots that I’m constantly working on, which range from editorial spreads to capturing the beautiful details of plated food or table scapes for commercial assignments. The low aperture is also great for low light situations such as shooting at restaurants. I highly recommend this lens, because of how versatile it is and the quality is OH-SO-SHARP. So for me, it was worth every penny.

NIKON

Nikon 105mm 2.8

I use this macro lens just as much as my 35mm. It’s an excellent full frame, prime lens that allows close range shooting. Moreover, this lens lets me get up close to those delicious gooey details with incredible sharpness. So I definitely recommend this lens to food photographers who want to capture the type of images that make people feel like they can taste the food.

NIKON

Nikon 14-24mm 2.8

This lens may come as a surprise in my lineup. I shoot with brands, but I also shoot with restaurants and hospitality clients. But, sometimes I need to shoot on location to shoot with these clients. So this lens is an absolute must for me. It’s a full frame, ultra wide angle, zoom lens that has a nice range of wide-angle focal lengths. In fact, it’s my favorite lens for capturing stunning interior, exterior and landscape images for my clients. So I don’t shoot on location without it.

Cost: $1,600

NIKON

Nikon 24-70mm 2.8

I rent this lens for shoots a lot, so I definitely wanted to include it. In fact, it’s a gorgeous full frame, zoom lens that ranges from wide angle to closer telephoto shots. It is on the heavier side, but it’s extremely versatile whether you’re shooting food, people, interiors/exteriors or landscapes and don’t want to switch out your lens during the shoot. And it works really well for me if I’m capturing shots at a restaurant or action in the kitchen, because it allows me to zoom in or out without having to move around too much and potentially get in the way. It also works well for studio shoots if you want to get closer or further way from the food without having to adjust your tripod.
