Whole Wheat Pancakes with Raspberries

I'm your food photography guru sharing photography tips, equipment ideas and business advice to help you improve your photography skills and navigate the world of food photography a little easier.

Hey, I'm Regan.

Big shout out to Gina and her blog, Skinny Taste for introducing me the deliciousness of whole wheat pancakes! She rewrote her original recipe several times to make sure it was perfect and her research definitely paid off. I’ve been making these for Mike and myself for a while now, so I decided to do a photo shoot featuring Gina’s recipe.

Food Photography Tips for Whole Wheat Pancakes

Try Going Dark & Moody

For this photo shoot, I wanted to create a more dark and moody look. I decided to use a dark wood board that I found in our garage after we moved in and setup on our beautiful wood table from West Elm and natural light from the large window on the right. I used a rustic plate from Anthropologie and a torn piece of burlap for a little added texture.

Show More Of The Scene

I decided to shoot pulled back to capture more of the table scene and the pancakes before adding syrup. Capturing the action of syrup can take some time, so I thought it was important to get the other shots completed first. I used my 24-70mm 2.8 lens which allowed me to keep my camera securely positioned on my tripod with the ability to zoom in or out as needed.

Recipe Notes for Whole Wheat Pancakes

When I first heard “whole wheat” I wondered if the pancakes would be bland. But, they were SO GOOD and actually turned out much more flavorful than regular pancakes.

Add Cinnamon

The cinnamon and vanilla flavors really shine through with a nice sweetness.

Use Really Good Maple Syrup

These fluffy ‘cakes can be enjoyed on their own, but since I’m a sucker for really good maple syrup, I always pour it on. I’m lucky that my brother-n-law makes his own maple syrup every year, which reminds me… I need to ask him to send me more!

Thank you, Gina, for opening my eyes to how pancakes can be delicious AND healthy!
